Australia's Ned Kelly riddle fans a Ripper yarn
A skull long believed to be that of bushranger Ned Kelly may in fact be that of a man rumoured to be Jack the Ripper.
Forensic pathologist and Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine deputy director Prof David Ranson is heading to Britain to ask relatives of hanged English killer Frederick Bailey Deeming to come forward and give their DNA.
"A simple swab from the mouth of any person from the female line of the Deeming family will help us answer this fascinating piece of folklore," said Prof Ranson,
Deeming was a 19th century wife-killer, bigamist, thief and conman who murdered women and children on opposite sides of the world.
After his execution in Melbourne in 1892 for murder, it was speculated he committed the Whitechapel Murders. His brothers and sisters distanced themselves by taking the name Bailey, their mother's maiden name.
The skull of Kelly, who was hanged for murder at Old Melbourne Gaol in November 1880, was stolen from a glass cabinet there.
Last year, West Australian farmer Tom Baxter handed in a skull, saying it was the stolen one and refusing to explain how he came by it.
Prof Ranson, on behalf of the Victoria coroner, is trying to determine whether the skull is Kelly's or Deeming's.
Scientists at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine had the skull examined by experts and gave it a CT scan, but were none the wiser, despite forensic pathologists managing to obtain DNA from one of Kelly's descendants.
Their problem is that not only is the skull a close match to the death mask of Kelly, but it also resembles one of Deeming. Both plaster casts are held at the jail, which is where both men were executed and buried close by each other in the prison yard.
They were later dug up and moved to Pentridge, and moved again when it was redeveloped.
When Deeming was hanged, more than 12,000 people in the street outside cheered wildly.
He had committed crimes on three continents, using at least 20 aliases.
Three months after his execution newspapers including the New York Times published stories that Deeming had been seen in Whitechapel in London's East End in 1888 buying knives.
In prison, he told fellow inmates that he was Jack the Ripper, but he never confessed to authorities.
Prof Ranson said: "We are hoping to find one of Fred Deeming's relatives in Ireland, England or Scotland who will be willing to help."

London in the 1880 was not a safe place. The street were full of working girls who were threatened by a ruthless man demanding payment from them on a weekly basis and when one of them is murdered the finger of suspicion is pointed at this man. The murder is a strange and brutal one so the expertise of Inspector Fred Abberline is called for.
Inspector Abberline has psychic abilities and he dreams of things which are going to happen or the details of things which have already happened which enables him to solve cases. He is called upon for this specific murder as it was so brutal and vital organs have been taken from the body. Abberline has to try and work out who would do this but when other working girls start to be murdered he has to find out who would have the knowledge and talent to be able to remove the organs in the precise way in which they have been taken.
Will Abberline be able to use his psychic abilities to solve the case of the now named murderer, Jack the Ripper or will London be destined to be run by this notorious murderer and is there a method to his killings?
I really did want to watch this film as it stars a favourite of mine, Johnny Depp but the storyline was not one which I though I would enjoy and I thought it would actually terrify me. I have to say I did manage to get through the whole of the film without having to look away or fast forward parts. I found the storyline and the way it was told to be excellent and very easy to follow.
Johnny Depp took the lead role of Inspector Abberline and he was excellent. He looked the part and I loved how he used his crazy eyes to show us when he was under the influence of drugs so he could get his visions. He really did make his role very believable and interesting. I liked how not much of his past was told to us at the beginning of the film as it made him seem very mysterious. He worked well with all the other actors and actresses in the film and he had a good partnership with Robbie Coultrane who played his Sergeant. Robbie was a surprise actor in this film for me but he too did a great job.
There are a lot of good supporting actors and actresses in this film and I have to say it was nice to see the British playing the majority of the roles. They were all good and there was also a very good mix of characters which gave the film some needed depth and variety.
The film was based in London back in the 1880's and I have to say all of the sets and scenery looked very good and well made. A lot of effort must have been put into making the costumes and props look so good and authentic for the year it was based on. The music was also a very big part of the film as it was what added to the drama and tensions of the murders and the storyline. I enjoyed all of the music in this film and thought that it was all very well composed.
The special effects throughout the film really were excellent. I have to say we did not get to see much of the murders which for me was great but when we got to see the bodies then they all looked very real and gruesome and a lot of effort must have been made with these. The other special effects were all very good and fitted well into the film.
For me I was put off as I though this film would be very brutal and gruesome and I will confess to being a big baby with scary and brutal films but I was comfortably able to watch this, we did not get to see the whole of each murder but we did see the shining of the blade which was used and the rest was left to the imagination which for me was excellent. I do say there are still a few scenes which are stomach turning when we see the bodies and when we do get a glimpse in the hospital where an operation is taking place but if I can manage to watch these then everyone else will as well.

I have not watched any of these so I am not able to give comment on them.
The running time of this film is 117 minutes and found this was a great length and the story moved at a good pace from start to finish and I was not loosing interest at any point. The certificate is an 18 and I do agree with this due to the subject matter and some of the scenes which we get. I paid just £3 for this in Tesco and I felt this was a complete bargain. I am defiantly going to recommend this film as it has an excellent cast list, excellent effects and a great story which will keep you guessing if you don't know who the real Ripper was.

British PhD Student Studied Jack the Ripper, Then Killed Like Him

As a PhD criminology student, Stephen Griffiths studied 19th-century murders with a special focus on Jack the Ripper. Now he's been arrested for murdering three prostitutes in Yorkshire, England—one of whom he killed with a crossbow.
The arrest came after an apartment building caretaker reviewed the security footage from the night before and saw this, according to the Telegraph:
In a corridor of the flats, a man chased and grabbed a young woman before knocking her unconscious. The attacker then disappeared from view, only to return moments later with a crossbow which he used to fire a bolt into her head.Police believe the video shows 40 year-old Stephen Griffiths killing 36 year-old Suzanne Blamires, one of his three victims. When they arrested him at his house, he led them to the dismembered bodies of the two others.
Judging from media accounts he certainly seems like someone who would be a serial killer. In addition to his obsession with historical murder—he told his neighbor he was getting "a Ph.D. in murder and Jack the Ripper"—he kept two giant monitor lizards in his apartment, where he lived alone.
A neighbor said he bred mice to feed the lizards and kept 100 of them in a trunk in his apartment, according to the Telegraph. On his MySpace he goes by "Ven Pariah" and says he "is the misanthrope who brought hate into heaven." And he apparently bought parts for his crossbow on Amazon.

Last week, we discovered the picture on the right — Jack the Ripper for the Nintendo DS made by Sanuk Games, the same group working on Hysteria Project for PlayStation Minis.

This is a seek-and-find adventure game in which players assume the role of an investigator attempting to solve the mystery of Jack the Ripper. Players search for clues among scenes of jumbled objects, interview suspects, and read a narrative that details the timeline of five murder cases. On-screen text and dialogue detail the murders; for example, "She had suffered a series of horrific wounds and the killer had removed several of her organs with surgical precision," "Mary Kelly’s body was found . . . dismembered and mutilated beyond recognition," and "The next job I do I shall clip the lady’s ears off and send . . ." Some clues, such as a straight razor and a handkerchief, are stained with blood. A letter in the game describes victims as "wh*res," and a character biography references a man’s contraction of syphilis.

Feminists, supporters ‘take back the night’

Feminist March: The Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance and the Committee on Rape Education walked through campus Thursday as a protest of attacks on women.
The main goal of the march is to make it safe for women to be out during the night without having to feel discomfort and anxiety.
"There is a fear that, as women in society, we have to deal with every day, and every night, that keeps us from going out," FMLA President Leah Hartman '12 said. "I think a big goal is to address this fear."
"It's a vigil march," CORE President Alex Turner '11 said of the march which met at Rabb steps at 7 p.m. and walked to each quad ending at the Shapiro Campus Center.
The organizers distributed candles and chanting guides for the walk.
At the quad stops, student marchers were encouraged to share their own stories and spoken word poetry was performed. Director of Public Safety Ed Callahan, a few graduate students from the Women's Resource Center and others also spoke out for the cause. The Rape Crisis Counseling Hotline gave the organizers a piece to read, in which all the stories were anonymous.
"Everyone is invited to speak, whether they have something prepared or they prefer to talk extemporaneously," Jon Sussman '12 a member of FMLA said.
This event is more than a fight for a safe public space in the future.
"We're also empowering people to speak out about their own experiences," Hartman said.
The march sought to provide a safe atmosphere for the survivors of sexual assault, and other people affected by this phenomenon, to share their stories and feel the support of the Brandeis community.
"Rallies such as these are about more than raising awareness," Sussman explained, "they provide empowerment. They provide a crucial space for survivors and others affected by rape and sexual assault to come together, to let our community know that there are survivors among us and that we stand with them."
"I think it's important to educate people on the resources available to them on campus," Turner said. "I would hope that the people who come feel that this is a safe space to talk."
Take Back the Night is an international phenomenon. The first rally was in Brussels, Belgium, when the International Tribunal on Crimes Against Women occurred there in 1976. After that, walks began to take place all over the world.
One was held in Leeds, England, to commemorate the Jack the Ripper killings of the 1800s.
They also happened in India, Australia, Canada and the United States, among other countries.
"It's a march and a movement that's been around for a long time," Hartman said. There are old bracelets from the 2005 Brandeis march, and other items from the 2007 march, in the Women's Resource Center in Shapiro Campus Center.
"Rape and sexual assault and all sorts of relationship abuse are very relevant issues everywhere, but especially on college campuses," Hartman said. "I know a lot of my friends, from growing up in high school and people here, have had personal experiences with this. It's very important to address."
For Sussman, one of the most significant parts of the walk is, "to let out our feelings of frustration and rage that often accompany these issues; it is empowering in itself to just rear back and yell, to give voice to feelings of hurt and disillusionment that testify to the fact that we're still human."

The Aldgate: 19 taps, reasonable prices
The Aldgate (Udagawacho 30-4, Shibuya-ku, tel. 03 3462-2983) is quite a contrast with the other restaurants on Center-gai in Shibuya. This English-style pub has 19 taps that serve up a great balance of imports and Japanese local brews. They also offer several exclusive brews for beer hunters.Aldgate Ale and Harry Porter are favorites, and recently they've started serving Jack the Ripper IPA -- a nice, dry IPA with a long hop finish that is contract brewed exclusively for The Aldgate by Baird Brewing.
Beers are expensive. Glasses at around 650-750 and pints 950-1,050 but The Aldgate is still the best value of these five pubs, especially since the bar provides free Wi-Fi service.
Altogether there are 19 taps, with three to four of the taps serving guest beers and the others the excellent range of regulars.
The Aldgate occasionally opens early in the mornings for major overseas sporting events such as rugby matches and the Super Bowl. If you're interested in attending, it's advisable to make friends with the staff. This may also let you occasionally request a song from their impressive record collection.

He'll perform a show at 9 p.m. Friday in Skully's Music-Diner, 1151 N. High St., to raise money to publish his 1888 project - a Victorian-era thriller centering on Jack the Ripper and a supernatural gang war.
The concept, Parker said, has been endorsed by screenwriter Steve Niles ( 30 Days of Night) and Marvel Comics illustrator Mike Perkins ( Captain America).
Parker has set a May 23 deadline to raise $6,000 via the website www.kickstarter.com, which helps pair art projects with donors.
